SCCD Renews Oil Recycling Program Agreements

According to a media release from the Sheridan County Conservation District, the proposed terms are the same as in previous years, with the Conservation District covering the cost of collection and maintenance, and the towns providing a site for the tank, assistance with maintenance, and monitoring of oil levels.

The Oil Recycling Program has been provided as a free service to the community for over 30 years. The program was initiated to address concerns with rural oil disposal practices. As of October 2026, over 24,000 gallons have been recycled from the Dayton tank, and nearly 16,000 gallons from the Clearmont tank. Oil that is deposited into the tanks is collected and recycled through professional waste management companies and is free to residents.

The Conservation District urges residents to only deposit used motor oil in the tanks. Materials such as solvent, antifreeze, and carburetor fluid require the oil to be handled as hazardous waste, which makes disposal difficult and costly. Even trash, dirt, and water can cause issues. Containers used for transporting used oil should be packed out and disposed of and not left in or around the tanks.
