Forest Service Seeks Public Comment on Willett Creek Channel Improvement Project

March 8, 2022

Bighorn National Forest officials are inviting comments on the Willett Creek Channel Improvement Project on the Medicine Wheel Ranger District. The proposed action includes rerouting a section of Forest System Road 226 with switchbacks and drainage to reduce slope and erosion of the roadbed and rerouting the section of the road where it crosses the drainage bottom to a location that avoids wetlands and reduces the impact to water and ecological resources.

The project also includes decommissioning and reclaiming half a mile of old roadbed to restore riparian wetland continuity; removing and stabilizing existing low-water crossings on Willet Creek and the tributary by reconstructing and revegetating stream channel banks; developing new stream crossings that provide enhanced stream function; conducting maintenance to improve Forest System Roads 277 and 226 while providing access for heavy equipment to the project site and improve road conditions and reducing resource impacts and reclaiming two low water crossings and constructing new crossings in a location that minimizes resources impacts and improves user safety.

The total disturbance from proposed activities would be approximately 4.5 acres, including a small percentage of the Cloud Peak Contiguous North inventoried roadless area. Written comments can be submitted through April 6.
