Yellowstone National Park has reopened Slough Creek for overnight backcountry use to those who have a overnight backcountry permit.
Located in the northern portion of the park, Slough Creek is one of the park’s most visited backcountry areas.
The park is developing a new day-use permit system to potentially allow additional visitor access to Slough Creek at a later date.
Currently about 93% paved roads, 88% of the 1,000 miles of park trails and about 88% of backcountry campsites are open.
The majority of closed trails are in the northern portion of the park that experienced flooding last month.
The North and Northeast entrance roads remained closed to motor vehicle traffic, however bicyclists, along with fishermen, runners, walkers and joggers are allowed to enter those roads for a limited distance.
They can travel 1 mile on North Entrance Road to the Rescue Creek Trailhead, and up to 6 miles on Northeast Entrance Road to the Barronette Meadows area.
Construction crews are working on building a limited access road, between the North Entrance and Mammoth Hot Springs and they anticipate the road will be safe to travel on to some limited and managed visitor traffic before winter.
