Ucross rancher Criag Johnson published his first Longmire novel, The Cold Dish, in 2004. The Longmire Defense, the 19th novel in the Walt Longmire mystery series will be released on Sept. 5, 2023.
The stories of a gruff but decent, honest and capable small-town Sheriff are set in Absaroka County, Wyoming, real life Johnson County Wyoming.
The Longmire television series premiered on June 3, 2012 on the A&E network.
Although it was the highest rated drama series on the network, it was canceled in August 2014. The network said that it would not renew the series after the third season. Warner Horizon Television then offered it to other networks and Netflix purchased the show, starting their produced series at season four. Netflix released the sixth and final season on November 17, 2017.
All of this spurred the growth of the event that is Longmire Days, which originally began in 2012. Those first days consisted of Johnson, reading and signing his novels for his fans.
Since that time, Longmire Days has grown into four full day’s worth of events celebrating the cultural significance of Longmire, the area and the actors who portrayed the characters on screen.
The success has afforded Johnson the opportunity to form the Longmire Foundation, which now organizes and operates the large event.
Longmire Foundation Director, Jennifer McCormick, spoke on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse as to why the event branched out to form the foundation.

The foundation organizes fund raising events during Longmire Days. Through ticket sales and events such as auctions of Longmire memorabilia and even donations from the actors are then sent to other 501c3s in the community and throughout the Nation. Such as the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center, Johnson County Search and Rescue, K9s for Warriors, St. Francis Animal Shelter, and many more.
Although the dates and schedule for Longmire Days has been announced, the organizations that will receive funds from each event are currently being vetted by the Longmire Foundation Board.
