A Conditional Use Permit (CUP) requested by the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) to operate a temporary asphalt hot mix plant and staging area has been denied by the Sheridan County Commission.
The hot mix plant would have been located just off of County Road 131 (Meade Creek Road) and was requested for the purpose of providing asphalt to two separate WYDOT US Highway 14 pavement overlay projects, the Jim Creek Hill and Sheridan East road sections.
County Planner Mark Reid talked about the County Planning & Zoning Commission’s discussions and recommendation on the proposal.
A number of members of the public spoke against the hot mix plant because of potential dangers with truck traffic in the area, line-of-sight problems on the road, possible pollution into Meade Creek, and the fact that a similar request nearby was denied by the commission a few years ago.
That was addressed by Commissioner Tom Ringley.
According to discussions, it is not a necessity for WYDOT to have the hot mix plant in this location, it is just a convenience and won’t negatively affect the planned projects other than possibly getting fewer bids from contractors on the projects.
The commission voted to deny the request for the CUP.
