Book clubs offer more than just reading

News – Sheridan Media

Sheridan County Public Library System Programming Coordinator Denise Gillenwater stopped by Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to discuss the benefits of belonging to a book club.

Book clubs offer a chance for people to gather and discuss some of their favorite types of books. Whether it’s non-fiction or fiction, members can discuss character, plot and subtext.

Gillenwater spoke on why she decided to start a book club and how they choose the next novel they read.

By selecting and reading books chosen as a group members can oftentimes read something they would not have picked up on their own, offering an opportunity for members to broaden their reading horizons.

Discussions offer a chance to learn different perspectives and insights. This can lead to members learning to approach reading differently or a chance to highlight a portion of a book that may otherwise have been skimmed through. Book clubs are also a great way to connect with people and create friendships around common interests.

The Sheridan County Library System offers “book club kits” if a resident is interested in starting their own book club.
