On Wednesday, May 21, SCSD#2 Board of Trustees held a special meeting to discuss drafting a policy for staff and volunteers concerning concealed carry of firearms. SCSD#2 Superintendent Scott Stults opened the meeting.

Stults added that he sought legal advice, and he was informed that either way, it would not increase or decrease liability to the school if they chose to write policy.

Stults told the board he had sent out an anonymous survey to the staff

The survey stated that even though the repeal goes into effect on July 1, and the input from the staff was still important to them and it is a way to communicate with their legislatures your feelings to help guide their future decisions.

The first question on the survey was, “Were you in support of the gun free school zones?”

The other question that is most pertinent to the board of trustees was

On the survey, the staff were asked if they would take the training, even if they did not intend to carry a concealed weapon, 51% said yes, 48% said no. When asked if they planned to carry, 78.3% or 285, said no; 73 or 20% said they were unsure, and 1.8% or 6 individuals said yes. He added that this was an anonymous survey. We didn’t want this tied to individuals so they could be as honest as possible.

Stults added that when the bill becomes law on July 1, the school district cannot prevent anyone from coming into the school if they have a concealed carry permit. What we can do is

The board voted to move forward with the policy, and the first reading will be at the June 9 meeting. He said there are some differences between policy and rules, and the major one is that there has to be 45 days between the first and second readings.

At the July 14th meeting, there will an opportunity for public input and comments on this policy.

Two visitors, David Iverson of Cowboy State Politics and Harry Pollak attended the meeting.

One trustee was absent at the meeting, and one board member voted no on the policy, and the motion carried.
