For hunters who travel the Cowboy State, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department is reminding hunters of later season dates for several deer hunt areas in southeast Wyoming — a change made after multiple years of public feedback during the season-setting process.
This year, general license season dates for Deer Hunt Areas 15, 59 and 64 — along with Type 2 and Type 6 licenses in Areas 59 and 64 — will run Oct. 20-31. These areas are in nonresident regions T and J.
In the past, the general season for Hunt Area 15 ran Oct. 1-14, followed by general seasons for Hunt Areas 59 and 64 Oct. 15-31. That schedule often led hunters to move from one area to another, contributing to feelings of overcrowding.
“Some of these areas haven’t changed in more than 30 years, so these dates are a significant shift,” Laramie District Biologist and former Wheatland District Biologist Keaton Weber said. “But our conversations with landowners and hunters showed us that it was time for something different.”
According to Weber, the later dates are intended to give hunters greater success by aligning the season more closely with the onset of the rut and cooler fall weather. These new season dates in hunt area 15 now overlap with neighboring hunt areas.
“We hope these later dates will not only improve hunter success rates, but also give everyone a bit more elbow room,” he said.
Additionally, the Department noted Hunt Area 15 (nonresident region T) is a priority herd for chronic wasting disease sampling this year. Hunters are encouraged to submit CWD samples as part of Game and Fish’s ongoing monitoring and management of the disease. Learn more about CWD on the Department’s CWD webpage.
