Man Charged with Felony Theft Changes Plea in District Court

Pursuant to terms of a plea agreement reached with the State, Mervin Bishop pleaded guilty to the charges of felony theft, misdemeanor reckless driving, and misdemeanor fleeing or attempting to elude an officer. The plea agreement is for a 3 to 5 year prison sentence for the theft charge, suspended in lieu of three years of supervised probation, and 180 days in jail for both of the misdemeanor charges. The suspended sentence will run consecutive to the jail sentence, meaning Bishop will be placed on three years of supervised probation following his release from the Sheridan County Detention Center.

District Court Judge Darci Phillips ordered that a presentence investigation be completed by the Department of Corrections Division of Probation and Parole and scheduled sentencing for December 2 at 9 am. Bishop’s bond was revoked and he was remanded to the custody of the Sheridan County Detention Center pending sentencing.

Bishop was arrested on April 7 of this year after he stole a Kia Soul from the Wal-Mart Parking lot in Sheridan and led law enforcement on a high speed chase on Interstate 90, where speeds reached over 110 mph. According to court documents, the high speed chase went through a construction zone with Bishop traveling in excess of 100 mph. Bishop was arrested shortly after the vehicle ran out of gas on the highway.
