Cemetery Walk at Fort Phil Kearny on Sept. 3

August 29, 2025

News – Sheridan Media

The cemetery at Fort Phil Kearny may be abandoned but not forgotten. The annual hike to learn more about the history of the cemetery will be held on Wednesday, September 3, beginning at 6 p.m.

The event will start in the Interpretive Center for a short presentation by Site Superintendent Sharie Shada on the history of the cemetery and it’s occupants, followed by a gentle one mile hike to the cemetery site.

While the fort was being built in 1866, the soldiers made the time to lay out a cemetery at the start. It was a rather bleak outlook for the isolated frontier post.

Although most of the remains that were buried there were moved to the Custer National Cemetery in Montana, there are undoubtedly still bones buried in the cemetery, so it is still hallowed and sacred ground.

Admission is $4 per adult and all are welcome.
