The SCSD#3 Board held their monthly meeting on Wednesday, September 10. The elementary KOA Cub House gave a video presentation to the board. In the absence of Chairman Karis Prusak, Vice-Chairman Kelly Little ran the meeting.

In the audience comments section, parent Amy Vineyard spoke to the board about some concerns she had.

Later in the meeting, Superintendent Chase Christensen talked about the activities funds. He said he has had conversations about the funds.

He felt the houses had more students to help out with events like prom rather than just putting the entire cost and planning with the junior class, which is very small this year. He said that graduation expenses will be covered as it has been in previous years.

In the administrative reports, Mike Buss, maintenance supervisor, gave the board a written report of what has been done over the summer, saying the maintenance department has accomplished most of the goals that were set. They included: the sprinkler system, which is now complete. It is running well and they are seeing the difference in the lawn around the school; the rocks around the green house are in and the drainage is placed under them. It will ensure that water doesn’t pool around the greenhouse: our project out on the front sidewalk turned out just as beautiful as Buss had hoped. “At night when all the lights come on, I think that it sets the school into a different light (no pun intended). We also put lights on the flag in our glorious colors so that we can keep old glory flying all the time.” he said.

Activities Director Jennifer Betz reported on athletics for the upcoming year, saying there are currently 11 girls participating in junior high volleyball and 11 girls in high school volleyball. Additionally, two boys are playing football with Buffalo High School. To help support these programs, she recommend hiring a certified volunteer. She also proposed restructuring the Activities Director position by splitting the duties. “This division of responsibilities will provide stronger oversight, allow for more focused attention on individual activities, and create greater balance in managing both student participation and program development. Splitting the role will also help distribute responsibilities more effectively while building additional leadership within the program,” Betz said in her report.

In the music program, Betz said they have four high school students and five 7-8th grade students enrolled in music this semester. These students have been working on music to play at the 9/11 service that the student council is hosting.

The students in the music program have been asked to play at the Veteran’s Day Service at the Community Center in November. During the first week of school, 7-12 band members expressed interest in doing a fundraiser to purchase t-shirts for the pep band this year. The students would wear these shirts when the group performs at basketball games and pep club assemblies. The group will be looking into fundraiser ideas this semester.

In other business, the board moved to approve several purchases over $5,000.

One bill the board approved was to WY-Not Print LLC, for the painting in the gym. Superintendent Christensen had this comment.

He also talked about Accountability Data, how the students are doing at A-C School. He said they are meeting expectations of the state. “That is where we have been for the last four years,” Christensen added.

The information is a compilation of the WY-TOPP and ACT tests, as well as graduations rates and how school helps the students to be ready for either college, workforce or the military.

Next community lunch will be held on Oct. 1, be sure to call the school in advance to allow the food services to order sufficient food.
