Sheridan County Undersheriff Patrol Lieutenant Doug Sanders is reminding the public that Wyoming State Statute 31-5-910 requires vehicle lights to be turned on from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise, as well as during low-light conditions in the daytime.

The Undersheriff said deputies do not see violations of the law frequently, but some vehicles still require manual activation of headlights.

Situations arise where vehicles with daytime running lights must also have their full headlights activated. Sanders said drivers often forget to turn on headlights in these conditions, but as the seasons change, those situations will become more common.

Vehicles equipped with daytime running lights are not sufficient during dark weather because DRLs do not activate tail lights, making it difficult for drivers behind to see. On many vehicles, DRLs light only the front, creating a dangerous blind spot for approaching traffic from the rear.

Sanders recommends periodically checking vehicle lights and making sure all bulbs are in proper working condition. He said if one burns out, it is best to replace both, since they often fail around the same time.
