The Museum at the Bighorns in Sheridan will host the traveling exhibition “Voices and Votes: Democracy in America” beginning Saturday, April 18, offering residents an in-depth look at the nation’s nearly 250-year experiment in self-government while also serving as the grand opening of the museum’s full exhibit space.

The exhibit, organized in partnership with the Wyoming State Museum and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, will remain on display through June 13 as part of Sheridan County’s America 250 celebration. During an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Museum at the Bighorns Executive Director Carrie Edinger and Operation Manger Chip King said the exhibit will make its Wyoming debut here in Sheridan.

The exhibition explores the founding of the United States and the ongoing evolution of democracy, beginning with the American Revolution and the break from British rule in 1776, followed by the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and the ratification of the Constitution in 1789. Edinger said this exhibit examines early debates over the balance of power and representation, while also highlighting how voting rights were initially limited to a small portion of the population and expanded over time through amendments and social change.

In addition to the exhibit, the museum will host a series of community programs designed to engage visitors of all ages, including a members-only preview the morning of April 18 and a family-focused event featuring hands-on activities later that day.

Additional programming includes a presentation on Wyoming’s suffrage history and a panel-style discussion on the mechanics of democracy involving local officials and students of the title winning “We the People” Sheridan High School program, providing opportunities for the public to explore how democratic participation continues to shape communities today.
