Johnson County Year-in-Review 2021: January to April

Today we begin our look back at Johnson County’s top stories during the last year as we focus on January through April of 2021.

The Buffalo City Council moved their first meeting of the year on January 4 to the Bomber Mountain Civic Center to to accommodate more people and to allow social distancing for those attending.

The meeting featured the swearing in of re-elected Councilman Scott Madsen and Councilman-elect John Camino.

A pedestrian was hit and killed in January by a school bus belonging to Johnson County School District #1.

The Buffalo Police Department’s Facebook page said the preliminary investigation showed an adult male, later identified as 20-year-old Nicholas J. Thompson of Buffalo, was attempting to access his vehicle parked on South Main Street when he was struck by a passing Johnson County School Bus.

The victim sustained critical injuries and was transported to the Johnson County Healthcare Center for treatment, but later died.

Jim Wagner, Superintendent for Johnson County School District #1, submitted his resignation to the school board during a regular meeting in February.

The board voted to seek assistance from the Wyoming School Board Association in the search for a new district superintendent.

The old SHOPKO building in Buffalo was sold in March, and later became a Bomgaars store.

Bomgaars has over 90 stores in seven states and employs approximately 2,400 people.

Johnson County Healthcare Center CEO Sean McCallister gave his resignation to the hospital board in March which was to be effective a few months later, due to personal reasons.

McCallister said, “I am extremely proud of our accomplishments and progress the past two years. Balancing fiscal stewardship with responsible growth has been key to our success.”

After interviews and public forums with three candidates for the position, the Johnson County School Board held a special meeting in April to announce the selection of Charles Auzqui as the new district superintendent.

Auzqui assumed his responsibilities with the school district in the summer of 2021.

And those are the top stories in Johnson County from January to April of 2021.
