In the midst of the Indian Wars on the western frontier, the Wagon Box Fight stands out for its unlikely outcome. On August 2, 1867 Chief Red Cloud and an estimated force of 1,000 Sioux Indians attacked a group of woodcutters and soldiers camped outside of Fort Phil Kearny.

Rosebud Battlefield is associated with the lead up to the Battle of Little Bighorn. It represents the proactive position of the 1,500 Sioux and Northern Cheyenne as they forced the withdrawal of Brigadier General George Crook’s 1,000 troops at Rosebud Creek.

The Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark, named by white men who discovered it at the end of the 1800s, is located near the Bighorn River and east of Lovell and the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area.

Mandel Cabin One of Sheridan’s first buildings, the old Mandel Cabin makes its home in the Whitney Commons park. Edward A. Whitney, for whom the park is named, established Sheridan’s first bank in the building. Whitney resided in living quarters above the cabin for the remainder of his years.

With the western expansion came the white man. The Sioux, of what is now South Dakota, refused to give up their land to the white man for the ensuing gold rush in to the Black Hills.

Johnson County is home to one of the most notorious outlaw hideouts, a remote pass near Kaycee and the Big Horn Mountains known as the “Hole-in-the-Wall.”

Many people have kicked at a pretty rock with their feet and found a precious jewel. Others have pulled an old bone from Mother Earth, only to find a dinosaur fossil.
