Local and state government officials are backing a plan that would protect Buffalo’s Veterans Home of Wyoming and other sites in the state from mineral development on the state-owned properties.

Johnson County Commissioner Bill Novotny said in a recent interview that there is potential for mineral lease development around the Veterans Home site, and that there is a draft bill to be introduced in the upcoming session of the state legislature to permanently protect the Veterans’ Home and skilled nursing facility, the Richard Bridge Historical Park, and the Oregon Trail State Veterans’ Cemetery.

Novotny explained how the draft bill came about and how the public can help protect these sites.
