February 8, 2022

Active case numbers of COVID-19 have been on the decline even as Sheridan County adds 13 lab confirmed cases and four probable in the last 24 hours.

Currently, Sheridan County has 88 active cases in the community. Active cases reported by the Sheridan County COVID-19 Public Information Officer Jennifer Graves on Jan. 24, (less than a month ago) was 465.

According to Sheridan Memorial Hospital Marketing Manager Alan Dubberley, testing at the hospital has fallen off as well. For the week of Jan. 11, the hospital tested an average 111 residents a day, the week of Jan. 23, tested 86 a day. Dubberley reports that last week the average number of tests administered a day had fallen to 58.

The virus is still active in the community and aggressive enough that a number of residents require hospitalization, currently 10 residents are hospitalized battling the virus. Just last week the virus claimed the lives of two more Sheridan County residents, bringing that total to 65.

Fingers are crossed throughout the nation in hopes the decline in cases continues, that a new mutation does not develop and take hold, but like so many other variables regarding COVID-19, there’s not enough information to know for sure. For now, hospitals are just hoping to be able to catch their breath after a two-year sprint.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention list Sheridan County’s level of community transmission as HIGH.
