Not only do Sheridan Bronc Athletes shoot hoops, wrestle, swim and compete in indoor track and field during the winter, they also hit ski trails.
Starting next school year, Sheridan will have a varsity Nordic Ski Team, which is sometimes referred to as cross country skiing, and not to be confused with alpine skiing, which is downhill.
Activities Director Don Julian says for the past 5 winter seasons, Sheridan has had individuals compete in nordic skiing, co-oping with Cody the past 2 seasons, and with Laramie the previous 3 before then.
He adds the last several years there’s been enough interest from within both the high school and the junior high school, that Sheridan County School District 2 officials decided that now is a good time to add the varsity sport to the athletics program.

“We think we have sustainability. We’re expecting 30 in the junior high next year, and there’s several schools around the state that run programs with only 15-to-20 kids, so we’re right there and we feel like we have enough students who are interested in it, and enough interest from younger students in the junior high that it will continue to sustain itself.”
Sheridan will be the 8th high school varsity nordic ski team in the state along with Cody, Laramie, Jackson, Pinedale, Lander and both Casper schools.
Julian says if and when Sheridan has a home Nordic ski meet, it will probably be held at the Antelope Butte Ski Area.
