Just because they served our country and learned skills along the way, doesn’t mean a person has what it takes to get a specific job when they return to civilian life.
Lately a nationwide push has been made to encourage veterans to continue the job hunt and for employers to hire veterans.
Anthony Fairbanks community employment coordinator at the Sheridan VA Health Care System.
He says sometimes the job hunt and interview process can be time consuming and frustrating, but there’s help at such places as a job fair, through employment coordinators, or through the State Department of Workforce Services.
He adds those strategies not only help job seekers, but employers as well.

“We work with a lot of employers in the Sheridan area. We can save them time, energy and costs trying to directly recruit some of our veterans, instead of going through the normal avenue that takes weeks, sometimes months, we can try to shorten that for them.”
Fairbanks says job hunting in the area where you came from can provide a small advantage, depending on who you know, however that strategy can sometimes backfire.
