Sheridan Utilities Director Dan Roberts addressed the city council at their last meeting to give an update of water quality and supply.
Roberts said Sheridan’s water supply is 100% surface water, with no groundwater wells to provide water to the public, which is rare in Wyoming.
Most systems in the state are a combination of surface and groundwater systems.
He said there are pros and cons to both types of systems.
Another benefit is that Sheridan’s water supply is mostly gravity-fed so there are few pump stations to get water from the mountains to the communitites, which is a cost benefit for the city.
Surface water has a lower mineral content as opposed to groundwater which can be problematic from a treatment process.
Surface water also generally takes more treatment than groundwater, which may only take disinfecting for use.
Tom Manolis, Water Supply and Treatment Superintendent, spoke on water quality, and we will have more on that in an upcoming story.
