News – Sheridan Media
While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Chief of the Sheridan Police Department, Travis Koltiska and Captain Tom Ringley announced the department is preparing to test candidates on Jan. 19.
According to Ringley, the testing is performed within a one day period and as often as once a month. Although this is much more often than at many other agencies, Ringley said in his experience, it’s more convenient for those being tested and more efficient for the department.

According to Ringley, on average, the background checks will take two to four months to complete. Ringley told listeners these investigations are extensive and the department has and will send background investigators to conduct interviews in other states as long as the need to do so is practical and within the budget.
Candidates who have gotten to this point of testing will experience a physical fitness test consisting of push ups, sit ups, and a 1.5 mile run. Each event is timed. The written exam tests a candidate’s base of knowledge. After these tests are passed an oral board interviews a candidate and determines if the individual is an appropriate fit for the department and for the community.
Candidates can also expect a polygraph examination, a psychiatric evaluation and a physical to be conducted.
Once a candidate is found fit to begin the process of training to be prepared for duty, they have an interview with the Chief of the Department. Koltiksa informed listeners he alerts candidates to his expectations, talks about goals and values and the community. Koltiska said by this point in the testing process, the candidates have demonstrated their potential to be a member of the Sheridan Police Department.
