An ordinance regarding vaping and tobacco use by minors in the City of Sheridan was approved on first reading by the City Council at their regularly scheduled business meeting Tuesday night. City Attorney Brendon Kerns said Sheridan County School District Two has experienced a significant increase in vaping the last couple of years. Currently Wyoming Statute dictates a $25 fine for anyone under the age of 21 that’s in possession of tobacco or vaping products. District Two Superintendent Scott Stults addressed the City Council about the problem in their schools.

The ordinance, as it was approved on first reading, prohibits the use or possession of tobacco or vaping devices by anyone under the age of 21 within the City. The first offense would be punishable in Municipal Court by a fine of up to $100, the second offense would be up to a $200 fine and optional probation; and for a third offense or greater a minimum of $300 and probation. Councilors Andrew Patceg and Kristen Jennings voted against first reading approval of the ordinance.
Also from the City Council meeting, Sheridan Police Department Sergeant Jerald Rasmussen received a Life Saving Medal for his life-saving efforts on October 6, 2022. Police Chief Travis Koltiska talked about how Sergeant Rasmussen played a pivotal role in saving the life of Emillie Morgan.
