On August 9, at the Ucross Foundation Raymond Plank Center at 2753 US-14, there will be a workshop and field tour to identify Ventenata, an invasive grass, which has been spreading in Sheridan, Campbell, and Johnson County.
Jaycie Arndt, UW, talked about the tour, saying that it is focused on keeping local landowner’s and land managers updated on ventenata.
Ventenata (Ventenata dubia) was identified in Sheridan, Wyoming in 2016. It is a highly invasive winter annual grass that is known to increase fine fuels that increase wildfire severity and occurrence, decrease biodiversity, reduce wildlife habitat quality, decrease forage quality and grazing capacity up to 70%, and diminish soil cover and health.
Shortly after identification in Sheridan, multiple agencies collaborated to form the Northeast Wyoming Invasive Grasses Working Group (NEWIGWG). Arndt, added, “Our group has helped, and will continue to help landowners obtain funding to treat ventenata.
“At the field tour, we will meet for a classroom portion where we’ll go over ventenata, how to identify it, it’s impacts, and then discuss treatment options and program updates from NEWIGWG partners. Then we’ll travel to a field site so attendees can see ventenata and learn to ID it in the field.” Other topics to be covered will be ecology, treatment options, and Weed and Pest and NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service) updates.
