The growing use of e-bikes offers several benefits, including increased cardiovascular health through low-impact exercise, sustainable commuting and greater transportation versatility. However, the rise in popularity has also raised safety concerns in the City of Buffalo.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Buffalo Police Department Chief Sean Bisset said the use of e-bikes on public streets and sidewalks is becoming a concern for the department.

The issue has previously been discussed by the Buffalo City Council. Buffalo Mayor Shane Schrader, who also works full time as an EMT, told Sheridan Media last year that he has responded to accidents involving e-bikes and urged riders to stay off public sidewalks and follow traffic laws while operating on roadways.

The Chief said the city may need to consider more formal action.

Affordable and relatively inexpensive to operate, e-bikes have grown in popularity in recent years. Most models reach speeds of 15 to 20 mph, while Class 3 e-bikes can reach speeds up to 28 mph. Because they are powered by electric motors, the bikes operate with very little noise, which can make it difficult for motorists and pedestrians to detect them.

This combination of speed and limited sound can increase the risk of accidents, particularly on sidewalks.

Last year, Schrader said he hoped to avoid any formal regulation, instead asking riders to use roadways and follow existing traffic laws. An ordinance already prohibits skateboards and pedal bikes on downtown sidewalks, but in some cases that has not prevented the use of e-bikes and other electronic devices in restricted areas.
