Sheridan College will host a public lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, featuring Jenny McDonald, Ph.D., director and medical science liaison at Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. The event is free and open to the public.

The presentation, titled “From Bench to Industry: The Role of Medical Science Liaison,” will take place in Room 153 of the Edward A. Whitney Academic Center on the Sheridan College campus. The lecture will also be available via Zoom webinar at www.sheridan.edu/lecture, with the link accessible at the time of the event.

McDonald will discuss the evolving role of medical science liaisons, who serve as scientific experts, bridging research and clinical practice through strategic communication. The lecture will explore career pathways for students and researchers interested in transitioning from academia to industry, as well as the day-to-day responsibilities and skills needed to succeed in the field. It will also be informative for community members who are interested in learning more about the “dark side” of the industry.

With nearly a decade of experience in cardiovascular and oncology-focused roles, McDonald has contributed to product launches, clinical development and disease education initiatives. In her current position, she supports clinical data and research related to prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumors. “With careers in science rapidly evolving, this lecture offers valuable insight for students exploring opportunities beyond traditional academic paths,” said Sheridan College Associate Professor of Biology Scott Newbold. “We are excited to provide access to industry professionals who can share real-world experience and guidance.”

McDonald earned a bachelor’s degree in genetics with honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a doctorate from Loyola University Chicago, where she specialized in translational cardiovascular research. She also conducted dissertation research at the University of California, Davis, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cardiac tissue engineering.
