A 43-year-old Fort Washakie man was recently arraigned in federal court in Wyoming on a number of violent charges. At an arraignment hearing before U.S. District Court Judge Kelly Rankin, Denver Lee John Sr. pleaded not guilty to three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm, five counts of child abuse and one count of aggravated sexual abuse.
Judge Rankin set the trial for September 26, 2022 before U.S. District Judge Alan Johnson. If convicted on all counts, John faces 30 years to life in prison and fines of up to $2.25 million. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. The alleged crimes were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kerry Jacobson is prosecuting the case.
