Visitor numbers at the Nation’s First National Park are back to where they have been, one year after last year’s historic flooding.

For the 7th time in nine years, recreational visitor numbers at Yellowstone National Park have surpassed the 4-million mark.

The park surpassed that mark in September 2023 as more than 838,458 visitors passed through one of the park’s five entrances.

The September 2023 numbers are up 48% from last year (567,587 visits), when the park was dealing with problems caused by the flood, and are up 9% compared to September of 2019 (693,118), which is just before the COVID pandemic started.

For the year through the end of September, the park has seen more than 4,161,602 visits, which is the 2nd highest September season-to-date numbers behind 2021, which had recorded 4,472,687 visits.

There’s not much time left in the season.

Weather permitting, the last day for motor vehicle traffic throughout most of the park is Tuesday, October 31st.

After that the West, South and East entrances to the park, as well as all roads, except the ones that connect the North to the Northeast Entrances, are scheduled to close to allow snow to build up.

The park is scheduled to open for the winter season to snowmobile and snow coach traffic on December 15th.
