Sheridan High School’s “We the People” team brought home a state championship at the district and state competition held on Monday and Tuesday, December 4 and 5th, in Cheyenne. This is the 11th year since 2009 that the SHS team has won the competition.

Michael Thomas, SHS Social Studies teacher, had this to say about his team.

The 26 student team is made up mostly of juniors, but there are three SHS seniors on the team as well. Thomas said that 26 members is about average for the team.

He added that in one unit SHS students also excelled.

“We The People” is a research-based skills set that requires them to work in six units across the spectrum of American Government, he explains.

There were 16 teams competing, and schools ranged in size from Arvada-Clearmont up to the schools in Cheyenne and Casper. Cody, Upton, Wheatland, Rock Springs, and Green River to name a few of the schools that competed.

He added a thank you to the community.

The community has helped the team raise money 11 times and Thomas said that it is not cheap to take 26 kids to DC to compete. “We are very grateful and thankful for their support.”
