Keeping the furry family members cool in the heat

Representing the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter, Unleashed Foundation Director Marian Eccles made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to impart some tips on keeping your furry family member cool this hot summer season.

Dogs are highly susceptible to heat-related illnesses due to their limited ability to regulate body temperature and their reliance on panting. Some dog breeds are more susceptible than others, it’s important to research your dog’s breed and understand their particular needs. A good rule of thumb, if you feel hot, your dog feels worse. Dogs have a higher normal body temperature than humans, running approximately 100 – 102 °F, making them more prone to overheating.

The best technique is to always provide fresh, cool water, especially when it’s hot. Eccles suggested changing the water  regularly to prevent the growth of algae in the water. Add ice cubes to the water bowl to keep it cool. During treat time, consider offering water-rich foods like watermelon or cucumber.

Eccles said relief from the heat and sun is necessary if your dog spends a lot of time outside.

Water will help keep their body temperature from rising too high and keep them hydrated. But having a cool place to relax away from the sun is also key when dogs are outside.

Dog owners should also test the temperature of concrete and asphalt roadway and sidewalk surfaces by placing the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds before walking their dog. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s feet.
