The Sheridan County Conservation District reports approximately 80 people took part in this year’s Facing the Fire Workshop and Field Day, hosted by the Working Lands Collaborative and the District.

The two-part event kicked off in March with panel discussions on wildfire impacts, landowner preparedness, and rebuilding after disaster. Conversations and presentations focused on how fires affect working lands and what producers can do to build resiliency—both on the landscape and in their operations.

During the field day, participants visited sites in the Badger Creek area, including land impacted by both the 2020 Waddle Creek Fire and this year’s Badger Creek Fire. Stops on the tour featured native grass seedings, prescribed fire programs, prairie dog reclamation efforts, and biological control of invasive leafy spurge.

District Manager Carrie Rogaczewski wished to thank local organizations, sponsors and landowners, saying the event wouldn’t have been possible without their support. Andrew Cassiday of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service noted that these events provide opportunities to promote regenerative, resilient and systems-thinking agriculture using subject matter experts and each other.

The Working Lands Collaborative is made up of local landowners and agency partners focused on soil health and regenerative agriculture. Their mission is to grow local wisdom and cultivate resilient futures.
